It was mentioned that the Government would want the latest version of Android, i.e., Android v4.2 on the tablet. What was also mentioned was the ability of the proposed tablet to dual-boot. The second operating system would be Ubuntu OS, which would sit in an external memory card, so the tablet is required to have an external card slot as well.
The Government wants the tablet to have a 7 inch screen, with a resolution of at least 800×480 pixels, and a color depth of 16 bit at the minimum. Since the tablet will be expected to be a decent performer, the minimum RAM expected a 1GB DDR3, with at least 4GB of ROM which should be expandable up to 32GB. On the physical front, i.e., dimensions and weight, the dimensions proposed are as follows: 7.5 x 0.5 x 0.75 inches. The maximum proposed weight was set at 500g, which means the tablet will be easy to carry around, since there won’t be too much of bulk with it. The committee decided that the minimum battery life should be 3hrs of online video playback, 4hrs of offline video playback, and 5hrs of web browsing. Since the main purpose of the tablet would be to browse to internet, it will be required of the tablet to support most of the major 2G and 3G dongles, and also, support for computer peripheral like mice, keyboards, etc. As mentioned, the proposed specifications are already put up on the official websites of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY). Stakeholders are given a period of two weeks, where they can comment on the proposed specifications of the Aakash 4 tablet.
